If you have ever driven up the entrance road to Sunset Lake, you know that the journey to camp begins long before you reach the lodge, the lake, the cabins, or the campfire. For generations, that road has carried campers, staff, families, churches, and retreat guests toward moments that changed their lives. Many of us can trace pieces of our own story back to that drive into camp — the friendships formed, the decisions made, the calls to ministry discovered, and the deep reminder that we are loved by God.
This winter, Sunset Lake’s entrance road and culvert were badly damaged by severe storms, including a federally declared disaster in December and a second atmospheric river in March. The damage is serious, with current damage estimates exceeding $1.5 million. The damage is not covered by our insurance.  FEMA has also determined that the project is not eligible for public assistance funding. Because this road is the only safe, reliable, guest-appropriate access for normal camp operations, we are launching Open the Way: The Sunset Lake Entrance Road Campaign to restore the road and renew the mission.
I’ve attached a brief case statement that tells the story, shows the damage, and explains the need. We invite you to prayerfully consider making a gift toward this urgent project. Your gift will help make sure campers, families, churches, and guests can continue coming safely to the place where so many of our own stories began.
You can give online here: www.sunsetlake.org/open-the-way.Be sure to select Open the Way Campaign from the drop-down menu on the donate page.
Thank you for being part of the Sunset Lake story. Your gift opens the way for the next generation of campers to experience grace, community, adventure, and belonging.
With gratitude,
David Yeagley
